Young Scholars Essay Prize
The purpose of the RAVEN Young Scholars Essay Prize is to recognize outstanding upper-year undergraduate work which intersects with the core precepts and values of RAVEN -- indigeneity, social justice, and environmental rights. The winning paper, to be awarded a cash prize of $1000.00, will contribute to their critical advancement, seeking to broaden dialogues both within and beyond the academy. The essay competition is open to all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, and papers from all methodological and theoretical standpoints will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as indigenous, but students from all racial and ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The following are but a few of the paper topics that would be accepted:
- The role of cartography in the history of Native resettlement in British Columbia.
- Changing non-Aboriginal attitudes towards Reconciliation.
- The role of landscape in the political art of Lawrence Paul Yuxwelupton.
- The enhanced role of First Nations as environmental litigants in light of the reduced effectiveness of federal and provincial environmental legislation.
Candidates will be 3rd or 4th year undergraduates and enrolled full-time at one of the following institutions: Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria. Papers will be between 10-15 pages in length, double-spaced (excluding bibliography and tables), and must be submitted in PDF format to youngscholars@raventrust.com, no later than April 31, 2012.
N.B. Papers must include a separate title page with their name, student number, institution, and email address. No author identification can be on the essay pages themselves.
The adjudicating panel will consist of the following persons:
Dara Culhane -- Professor, Anthropology, Simon Fraser University.
Glen S. Coulthard -- Professor, Political Science, First Nations Studies Program, University of British Columbia.
Holly Vear -- Lawyer, Woodward & Company LLP.
Max Ritts -- Graduate Student, University of British Columbia; RAVEN.
The winning recipient will be notified of a decision via email in mid June 2012, and receive their prize over dinner at a Vancouver restaurant (TBA) where he/she will have the opportunity to meet with RAVEN board members and members of the adjudicating panel. The winning paper will also be featured on the RAVEN website (www.raventrust.com) where supporters/followers of the organization can read it and provide comments.
Please direct all questions to Max Ritts (max.ritts@geog.ubc.ca). Please do not recirculate this form to undergraduate list-servs as an abridged one will be sent to them.
