Huge thanks to Co-op Bank and their Customers Who Care Campaign!

It's amazing.  The donations are coming in daily in support of Beaver Lake Cree Nation and the band's plucky efforts to stand in the path of ecological disaster by launching a massive legal action.  The fortitude and forward-thinking members of BLCN caught the attention of a similarly inclined bank in Manchester - and the results speak for themselves.  The members of Manchester's Co-operative Bank are digging into their savings to assist this small Indigenous Nation prevent the destruction of their traditional lands by the expanding Alberta tar sands industies.  Their donations - channeled through RAVEN - go directly and 100% toward support for the band.  The funds help to pay for desperately needed scientific reports.  For example, RAVEN supports studies on how the tar sands developments affect wildlife habitat, the boreal forest, and the local watershed.

Left unchecked, expansion of the tar sands industry will result in: the destruction of the boreal forest eco-system, decreases in wildlife species, damage to the Athabasca watershed, the creation of toxic tailings ponds, and increased release of greenhouse gases.

Since RAVEN takes no government funding, and depends entirely on donations from individuals, foundations and socially responsible corporations, every dollar donated is critical and gratefully received.  We want to publicly thank Co-op Bank and its big-hearted, extremely generous members!

Here is the statement that the bank has sent to its membership.

On global Blog Action Day for Climate Change, here's a huge thanks to the Co-operative Bank!
